Fly Fishing Instructor
Jason Smith
Growing up fishing Appalachian streams with his father, Jason developed an early appreciation for moving water and the lessons it offers to those willing to slow down and observe. Those early trips ranged from day outings to backpacking and canoe-camping adventures throughout West Virginia and the surrounding states. More than the fishing itself, they established a connection to wild places—and to the people with whom we share them—that would stay with him long after childhood.
Fishing largely disappeared from Jason's life for many years as school, family, and a career as an Army officer took him far from the streams of his childhood. Eventually, fly fishing became a way back. What began with a basic fly rod, a book, and considerable trial and error grew into a serious pursuit and a renewed connection to the Appalachian mountains of his youth. After retiring to western North Carolina, years spent exploring the region's waters in every season have continued to shape the way he fishes.
Jason is less attached to any particular technique than to understanding the water and adapting to what conditions require. He is equally comfortable on larger rivers and small, heavily canopied mountain streams, changing tactics, tackle, and approach with water, weather, season, and terrain. His learning has combined extensive time on the water with formal training through Mac Brown Fly Fish and opportunities to learn from accomplished anglers and instructors. He continues to pursue Fly Fishers International Certified Instructor credentials.
That same curiosity shapes Jason's approach to teaching. He enjoys helping anglers understand not simply what to do, but why something works, and believes good instruction begins with observing both the water and the person learning. His approach is patient and adaptable, with an emphasis on building understanding, confidence, and an angler's ability to make thoughtful decisions independently.
Through volunteer work focused on mentoring and conservation, Jason also values the opportunities fly fishing creates for shared experience, connection, and stewardship. He believes appreciation for wild places carries with it a responsibility to care for them—and that some of the most meaningful days on the water are measured by more than the fish brought to hand.
