Fly Casting Instructor & Educator
Callie Freeman, PhD
Callie Freeman (PhD) is a passionate fly angler, dedicated educator and fly casting instructor known for helping anglers build confidence, refine technique, and deepen their understanding of the sport. With a PhD in Entomology and a professional background in science education and public speaking, Callie brings a unique blend of technical knowledge, patience and approachable instruction to every lesson and clinic.
Having lived and fished across the country from the Pacific Northwest to the Carolina coast and the mountains of Upstate South Carolina, Callie has pursued a wide variety of species and fisheries including steelhead, trout, smallmouth bass, and coastal redfish. These experiences have shaped both her fishing philosophy and her adaptable teaching style allowing her to connect with anglers pursuing everything from freshwater trout to saltwater game fish.
Her enthusiasm for teaching and fly casting led to her current pursuit of certification through Fly Fishers International under the mentorship of Master Casting Instructor Mary Ann Dozer. Callie offers instruction focused on efficiency, accuracy, distance, and presentation in both freshwater and saltwater fly fishing. Callie is especially interested in understanding the biomechanics of fly casting and tailoring instruction to each student's individual learning style and physical abilities to help anglers develop sustainable casting techniques.
In addition to instruction, Callie is a recognized speaker for regional and national events and is passionate about building community through education, conservation, and outreach. She has volunteered and partnered with numerous organizations including Casting Carolinas, Women in Waders Upstate, Trout Unlimited and the Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina. Her work has included educational programming and outreach supporting conservation groups, veterans' initiatives and women focused fly fishing programs.
Whether teaching on the water or presenting in front of a crowd Callie's goal is to create an encouraging learning environment that helps anglers grow their skills while fostering a lifelong connection to the resource and the sport.
Callie lives in Greenville, SC with her husband Lieutenant Colonel Heath Freeman (USMC retired), their two children, and beloved Labrador retriever Benelli Rose.
